Directly above Mile Marker 0.25, construction on Memorial Bridge officially started on May 24, 1948. Not long after, two American Bridge Company travelers were hoisting beams and girders into place from atop either end of the steel work. A trestle runs alongside the piers where cranes with clam-shell buckets excavated the river bottom, while a falsework bent can be seen on the near end that temporarily supports the steel while the span is completed.
