The Kennebec River Rail Trail has few specific rules and policies. In most cases, kindness, tolerance, common sense, and State law are enough to ensure a positive experience for all. However, please note and follow the reminders and specific policies below:

Smoking and Tobacco

The Kennebec River Rail Trail is dedicated to providing everyone with a safe and healthy environment and recognizes that smoking and the use of tobacco and cannabis products at our public recreation areas is detrimental to the health and safety of everyone. Therefore, Kennebec River Rail Trail has adopted a 100% tobacco-free public recreational area policy, that exceeds state law (22 M.R.S.A. § 1580-A).

This policy prohibits all smoking and the use of all tobacco and cannabis products 24 hours per day, 365
days a year:

  • In all Kennebec River Rail Trail owned, leased, and affiliated buildings.
  • On all Kennebec River Rail Trail owned or leased properties.
  • At all Kennebec River Rail Trail permitted or sanctioned events – both indoor and outdoor when
on Kennebec River Rail Trail property.

Everyone utilizing Kennebec River Rail Trail space is required to abide by Kennebec River Rail Trail’s smoke-free and tobacco-free policy at all times.

Please read the full Smoking and Tobacco Policy here.

Electric Bicycles

Electric bicycles (e-bikes) that meet Class 1 or Class 2 standards are the only motorized vehicles allowed on the trail besides wheelchairs and other mobility aids used by people with disabilities. The Kennebec River Rail Trail does not have a specific policy on e-bikes, but follows Maine State Law. According to this law (Title 29-A, §2063), Class 1 and Class 2 e-bikes are permitted on multi-use trails such as the KRRT, while Class 3 e-bikes are not. Please follow this State law and do not ride Class 3 e-bikes on the trail. Class 1 and Class 2 e-bikes are welcome.

Other Rules

  • Hours of operation are from dawn to dusk
  • No motorized vehicles except for the following: (1) wheelchairs or other mobility aids used by people with disabilities; (2) Class 1 or Class 2 e-bikes
  • Pedestrians have the right-of-way
  • Keep right so others can pass
  • Always pass on the left
  • Fast users give an audible signal before passing
  • Travel at speeds safe for conditions
  • Use caution on ice and snow conditions
  • Pets must be on a leash 5 ft or shorter at all times
  • Owners must clean up after their pet
  • Respect private land owners’ privacy
  • Respect the beauty of the trail
  • Carry out all trash
  • Do not litter and do not leave any objects or substances behind
  • Smoking and vaping are prohibited on the trail by specific policy (see above)

A general note on kindness and etiquette

The KRRT is a multi-use trail, and all users should be kind, polite, and tolerant towards other users.

Cyclists, please slow down when approaching pedestrians, and ring a bell or call out before passing. This is especially important for fast riders or e-bike riders; 20 mph is too fast to pass.

Pedestrians and dog-walkers, please stay as far to the right as possible, and stay alert to bikes approaching from behind.

Everyone, please be kind!
